Thanks to lent...

... I'm blogging again. I have come off Facebook until after Easter, replacing one addiction with another. I'm surprised at how much FB obsessed I am, and how I'm now considering how to replace this vast and shallow involvement in the lives of others with simpler, deeper friendships. I do miss Facebook, but I wonder if I'll go back. In a way it's freeing being away.

Do you listen to the "Spark" podcasts from CBC? I think it was last week's show, they were talking about mulitasking, and how we keep trying to be up to date with the newest information... and how fractured everything is in our collection of pieces of data... they recommended that you not check email (but I'm guessing this transfers well to FB too) unless you could do it spending a full 15 mins, at a time, not the 12 second check like I do ever half hour or so... they said that maybe we're changing the way our brain works by stretching it so thin....

Yeah, I found that I was either Facebook obsessed using it beyond reason or not logging in for months at a time. Eventually I decided to delete my account so that I can waste time on other hobbies. Facebook is great in how it can connect people separated by distance, by the passage of time, and/or by sanity, but it can also be a time leech - sucking my available time from loved ones close to me so I can learn why Brian, from Grade 9 gym class, does not like burnt toast.
"Spark" episode sounds interesting.
